Personal and Demonstrative Pronouns in Achagua: A Diachronic Approach
Main Article Content
This is a contrastive study of the pronoun forms (personal demonstrative) of Eighteenth Century Achagua language and modern Achagua and Piapoco. First, a comparison is made between Eighteenth Century Achagua forms gathered by Jesuits priests Neira and Rivero and the modern forms described in our research. Second, similarities and differences in these two periods are drawn, in order to support our hypothesis. This comparison leads to the exploration of the Piapoco language (one of the closest languages to Achagua within the Arawak-Maipure family) through a contastive procedure, with the purpose of looking for arguments that support plausible hypotheses on the diachronic changes of the personal and demonstrative pronoun forms in Achagua.
