Linguistic Change in Inga: Colombian Spanish-Inga Lexical and Grammatical Interpolation

Abstract

This is a review of a Spanish-Inga bilingualism study in Yunguillo, Putumayo. As result of the speakers’ bilingual competence, the coexistence of Inga and Spanish produces the so-called of interpolation phenomenon. That is, if there are L2 elements that are considered rhetorically eff ective and differentiable in the production of sense, then they are introduced in L1 with new phonological, morphological, and syntactic rules which make their transformation a dynamic one. Yet, for socialization and as a fundamental ethnic marker, L1 is still the default language.
