Using democratic citizenship viewpoints to analyze the constitution of political subjects in rap singers from the hip hop movement in Cali

Abstract

The expressions of urban music such as hip hop are normally identified from rap as scenarios for youth participation which contribute to young people’s constitution as political subjects: They allow them to become actively engaged critical subjects who have agency in the realities of their daily lives. Through their action within the music scene, they can take an active role in social transformation within their immediate context. Within Social Work, this article contributes to the studies that aim to increase the visibility of alternative youth scenes. It also places the scenes within their emergent social dynamics and shows their potential for future investigation and social intervention.
