Pacientes com HIV apresentam diminuição das células T CD4+, tornando-os mais suscetíveis ao desenvolvimento de infecções. A terapia antirretroviral (TARV) diminui a carga viral e melhora a produção de T-CD4. Tem sido sugerido que a periodontite poderia diminuir sua prevalência devido ao uso de antirretrovirais.
Objetivo: Identificar, através de uma revisão de literatura, as evidências mais recentes e relevantes de pacientes com HIV e o efeito da TARV no estado oral e periodontal.
Materiais e Métodos: Foi realizada busca de artigos clínicos no PubMed, Science Direct LILACS e Google Scholar, entre os anos de 2011 e 2023. Critérios de seleção: pacientes com TARV para HIV e avaliação do estado bucal/periodontal. Ensaios clínicos, revisões sistemáticas e metanálises foram incluídos.
Resultados: Inicialmente foram identificados 173 artigos, 135 foram excluídos, encontrando ao final apenas duas revisões sistemáticas e nenhum ensaio clínico. Uma revisão sistemática apresentou 18 artigos com 1.632 pacientes adultos com doença periodontal (DP) e terapia antirretroviral altamente ativa (HAART) e outra em crianças com 12 artigos e 1.002 pacientes <18 anos de idade revisando o estado periodontal e lesões orais.
Conclusão: HAART reduz a prevalência de manifestações orais em crianças com HIV; mas não é assim com a DP em pacientes adultos com HAART, com exceção da gengivite necrosante.
